Description
Hennepin County Permits Office in the Transportation Asset Management division is seeking two interns to join our team. As an intern, you will gain hands-on experience and knowledge of construction methods, project planning, best management practices, inter-agency collaboration, asset management, utilities, and public works.

Location and hours:
These positions are onsite and work duties will be performed at the Hennepin County Public Works Facility located at 1600 Prairie Drive in Medina, MN 55340. There is no public transportation to this facility. The ability to travel around Hennepin County to conduct field work and attend meetings is required. These positions will start in May 2025 and end in August 2025 with the possibility to extend on a case-by-case basis. Start and end dates will be determined after the candidates have been selected. The interns are scheduled to work 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire.

These positions are full-time, limited duration, non-benefit earning internships.
These positions are internally classified as an Intern II.

In these internships, you will:
· Engage in non-technical field inspection of municipal and utility projects during prime construction season.
· Serve as a back-up for Permits Office Field Inspectors on a limited number of larger projects.
· Assist inspectors in implementing and enforcing Hennepin County Ordinance 22 Right of Way/Utility/Access Permits and investigate potential or existing operational hazards within the county’s highway system to protect the safety of the traveling public.
Need to have:
· Must be in one of the following:
o Current enrollment in a vocational/technical, associate, or bachelor's degree program in construction management, engineering, land surveying/highway engineering technology, geography, GIS, urban planning/studies, or another related field.
o Recent graduate (within 12 months) in a vocational/technical, associate, or undergraduate degree program in construction management, engineering, land surveying/highway engineering technology, geography, GIS, urban planning/studies, or another related field.
· A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver’s permit.
· Ability to walk on uneven terrain; bend and stoop; work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
Nice to have:
· Experience with:
o Construction.
o Troubleshooting basic computer issue.
o Facilitation.
· Knowledge of:
o Math functions such as arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.
o Construction equipment, materials, and methods.
· Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and ArcGIS.
· Ability to:
o Communicate with staff at all levels of the organization, using all types of communication methods.
o Work independently and in a team setting.
· Strong organizational skills.
