Description
The Adult Representation Services (ARS) department is seeking a Law Clerk for a variety of civil proceedings such as representation of parents in child protection cases, tenants in evictions proceedings, non-custodial parents in child support contempt proceedings, respondents or persons subject to guardianship in guardianship and conservatorship cases, and representation of individuals facing civil commitment. The Adult Representation Services department provides high-quality, holistic representation to clients experiencing poverty in certain civil matters where appointment of counsel is necessary to protect a fundamental right or to further the county’s mission of reducing disparities and promoting the stability of residents. Current Hennepin County employees who refer a candidate hired into an open competitive position may be eligible for a $500 referral bonus. For more information visit employee referral program. Location and hours: This position is hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Human Services Building at 525 Portland Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55415 and remote as job duties require. Work hours will be flexible, part-time during the school year and full-time and/or part-time during the summer. New employees who are hired into remote or hybrid positions between January 2, 2022 to December 31, 2024, will receive $500 toward the cost of establishing consistent internet connectivity, payable upon completion of 6 months of employment. Click here to view the job classification specification. In this position, you will:
· Perform legal research.
· Write and file pleadings, internal memoranda, and other legal documents as directed by professional legal staff.
· Participate in court hearings under attorney supervision.
· Organize files, research and other legal data in preparation for litigation.
· Participate in case strategy sessions.
· Take part in internal and external community programs.
Need to have:
One of the following:
· Current enrollment in an accredited law school with completion of at least 2 full-time equivalent semesters at the time of hire.
· A graduate of an accredited law school
Nice to have:
· Experience working with diverse communities.
· Knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of legal research and writing, sources of legal information, the courts and court procedures, and the laws regulating local government agencies.
· Ability to:
o Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the various individuals served by Hennepin County.
o Analyze legal documents and instruments; to appraise and organize facts; to present comprehensive written and oral reports; and to establish effective working relationships.
o Analyze statutory and case laws; in computerized legal research; in compilation of legal bibliographies; in analysis of facts and data and in logical presentation of legal arguments in writing.
· Strong interest in a public sector law career.
· Commitment to serving individuals experiencing poverty.
